Milling machine have a general operation. The success of any milling operation depends before setting up the job. Be sure that to a great extent, upon judgment in setting up the job, work piece, the table, the taper in the spindle, selecting the proper milling cutter and holding the cutter by the best means under the circumstances. Some fundamental practices have been proved by experience to be necessary and the arbor or cutter shark are all clean and good results on all jobs. Some of these practices are mentioned.
Before setting up a job is sure that the work piece, table, the taper in the spindle and the arbor or cutter are free from chips, or burrs. Do not select a milling cutter of larger diameter than it necessary. Check the machine to see if it is in good running order and properly lubricated, and that if moves freely, but not too freely in all directions.
Consider direction of rotation. Many cutters can be reversed on the arbor. So, be sure you know whether the spindle is to rotate-clockwise or counter-clockwise. Feed the work piece in a direction opposite the rotation of the milling cutter (conventional milling).Do not change the feeds or speeds while the milling is in operation. When using the clamps to secure a work piece, be sure that they are tight gang that the piece is held. So it will not spring or vibrate under cut. Use recommended cutting oil liberally. Use good judgment and common sense in planning every job, and profit from previous mistakes. Set up every job as close to the milling spindle as circumstances will permit.
There are several accessories for the milling process except the cutting tools. Following accessories are very useful. A vise is use for fixing of the material. It is fixed to the table of the milling machine firmly. In the care of the cutting of a large sized material, the vise can be removed from the table. But the vise is installed again; it has to be fixit accurately in the x-axis. We should not remove the vise except unavoidable cases. Digital scale, the table of the milling machine can be adjusted accurately at the x-,y- and z- axis’s. We can adjust the positions with seeing the scales on the operating handles. The last one is, pointer master. In order to get a high accurate processing, the zero point must be adjusted exactly. LED’s of the points master light when the point touches a metal material including the vise. We can find the zero point easily with this tool.
Before we are using the milling machine, we should know what is milling machine care. Firstly, check and lubricate the machine with the recommended lubricants. Second, clean the machine thoroughly after each job. Use a brush to remove chips. Never attempt to clean the machine while it is running. Third, keep the machine clear of the tools. Forth, check each setup for adequate clearance between the work and the various parts of machine. Never force a cutter into a collets or holder. Check to see why it does not fit properly. Then, use a sharp cutter. Protect hands when mounting it. Start the machine operation only after we are sure that everything is in satisfactory working condition.
We are also have a precautions when operating a milling machine. We should avoid performing a machining operation on the milling machine until you are thoroughly familiar with how it should be done. Be sure the cutter rotates in the proper directions. Expensive cutter can be quickly ruined. Make sure be careful to store. Milling cutters, arbors, collets, and adapter after each use. They can be damaged if not stored properly. Remind that, never start a cut unless you are sure there is adequate clearance on all many parts. Be careful to read instructions when using the new synthetic oils, solvents and adhesives.
